Janie was born on January 26, 1935, in Crowley, Colorado, to Bentura and Clarita Martinez. As the eldest daughter, caring for others became a part of who she was from an early age—a quality she carried with her throughout her entire life.
Janie was a devoted mother to six children and later opened her heart and home to five of her grandchildren, whom she adopted and lovingly raised as her own. She was a caregiver in every sense of the word. Her love extended far beyond her immediate family, and she was known for welcoming others into her home and making them feel like family.
In her younger years, Janie enjoyed sewing and lovingly made many of her children’s clothes. Throughout her life, she found happiness in the simple things—her coffee, word searches, coloring, trips to the park with family, going to the movies, and traveling whenever she had the opportunity.
But one of Janie’s greatest joys was her family. She especially loved watching her grandchildren play sports and was always one of their biggest and proudest fans. She loved sports herself and was a devoted Raiders and Lakers fan.
Janie was blessed with a large and loving family, including 19 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great-grandchildren. Her family was her greatest legacy, and the love she gave will continue to live on through each generation.
Janie was preceded in death by her parents, Bentura and Clarita Martinez; her brothers, Isaac and Samuel Martinez; her sister, Simon; her son, Bennie Barragan; her daughter, Gerrie Barragan; her grandson, Johnny Barragan; and her great-grandson, Anthony Martinez.
Before her passing, Janie found great comfort and happiness in knowing that she would one day be laid to rest near her parents in Parlier—a place that would bring her close to those she had loved and missed for so many years.
Janie’s life was one of love, family, strength, and caring for others. She touched more lives than she probably ever realized, and the memories she gave us will remain in our hearts forever.
